What Mom Really Wants

Lisa Martinez

Mothers’ Day is coming up and you’ve outgrown handmade cards and macaroni necklaces. So, what does mom really want – other than your love and appreciation?

Some of the best gifts don’t come in a box. Here’s our foolproof guide to Mothers’ Day. (There are lots of events going on this weekend. Skip down to download a few of our itineraries.)

Time
Your mom has a million things on her to-do list and most likely 99% have nothing to do with her. Give mom a reason to schedule time for herself, even if it is just an hour escape. Book her a mani-pedi to go with her new open-toed wedges. Or, get her a monthly pass to her favorite fitness studio or whatever she needs to get her heart rate up and let go of stress. If she works on the grid, I suggest CrossFit Valiance or The Dailey Method. PS The Dailey Method has some really cute tops that transition from the barre workout to the weekend.

A Toast
No, no. Not bread. Celebrate mom with libations – a mimosa brunch, flight of wine, or her cocktail of choice. Let her unwind and then leave her alone. One of my favorite spots for a family brunch is deVere’s. My go to order: potato heaven (plus bacon), a house bloody mary and an almost famous Irish coffee. Aside from a killer brunch menu, they also have a family restroom. If you’ve got a kiddo in diapers or are potty training, that amenity is AMAZING! Or take mom on a whirlwind trip through wine country, and order her a flight and some small bites at Downtown & Vine and settle in on their patio.

Memories
A picture is worth a thousand words. Book a photo shoot with your favorite family photographer. She can always use it for that obligatory holiday card at the end of the year. Or pick a spot to take some candid shots with mom since she’s behind the camera most of the time. Classic spots for a family photo: on the Tower Bridge, on the steps of Capitol, Crocker Art Museum, Old Sacramento Riverfront. Or for something more edgy, how about an alley.
